Double Jeopardy (Advanced): German theologian who first coined the phrase "messianic secret."

ANSWERS to "Bible Trivia for 600, Alex" posted on July 25:
Jeopardy (Basic): Who is Benjamin? (Joseph and Benjamin are the two sons of Rachel. Jacob, their father, openly favored them over the sons of his other wife, Leah, and the sons of his wives' handmaids, Zilpah and Bilhah.)

Double Jeopardy (Advanced):  Who is Potiphar? (Not to be confused with Polycarp, second century bishop of Smyrna. In the Genesis story of Joseph, Potiphar recognizes Joseph's abilities and comes to rely on Joseph to manage his large business. Potiphar's wife tries to seduce Joseph and then accuses Joseph of rape. That's how Joseph winds up in prison.)

"Bible Trivia for 600, Alex!"

Remember to state your answer in the form of a question.

Jeopardy (Basic): This son of Jacob is described as a full-blood brother to Joseph.

Double Jeopardy (Advanced): The person who bought Joseph from the slavers, in the Book of Genesis.

All Bible verses are taken from the New American Bible Revised Edition.

ANSWERS to "Bible Trivia for 500, Alex" posted on July 21:

Jeopardy (Basic): What is the number 7? (Seven symbolizes perfection in the Bible. Six is a symbol of imperfection because it falls short of seven. The English idiom "to be at sixes and sevens" (suggesting confusion) may originate from these symbolic numbers, owing to a kind of tension between perfection and imperfection.)

Double Jeopardy (Advanced): What is Turkey. (Usually referred to as Asia Minor in discussions of the ancient world, this country also contains the birthplace of St. Paul--Tarsus. It borders the Mediterranean Sea on the south, the Black Sea on the north and the Aegean Sea on the west.)

"Bible Trivia for 500, Alex!"

Remember to state your answer in the form of a question. Good luck, contestants!

Jeopardy (Basic): This number symbolizes "perfection" in the Bible and recurs especially throughout the Book of Revelation.

Double Jeopardy (Advanced): The churches named in the Book of Revelation (Rev 1:10-11) are all located in this modern-day country.

All Bible verses are taken from the New American Bible Revised Edition.

ANSWERS to "Bible Trivia for 500, Alex" posted on July 21:
Jeopardy (Basic): Who is the woman, later named "Eve"? (The man names the woman "Eve," meaning "Mother of the Living" only after the text assigns her a subordinate position to the man. Naming in the Bible indicates power over the one named.)

Double Jeopardy (Advanced):  What is the Book of Job? ("The Satan" is a part of God's heavenly court in the Book of Job. Although interpretation places Satan in the Garden of Eden in the earlier biblical Book of Genesis, Genesis 3 actually only mentions "the serpent." Satan is not named. The serpent is a symbol of wisdom in the ancient world, and so the figure of the Genesis serpent is probably not meant to personify evil, but rather to show how the first parents grasped for a wisdom that God had reserved to himself.)

ANSWERS to "Bible Trivia for 300, Alex" posted on July 14:
Jeopardy (Basic): Who is Goliath? (A "giant" in the Old Testament can refer to either a legendary non-human figure, as in Gen 6:4, or to a human being of large stature. Goliath falls into the second category. Although many ancient texts describe Goliath as an unlikely "6 cubits and a span," or 9.5 feet, other ancient texts read "4 cubits and a span," or 6.5 feet.)

Double Jeopardy (Advanced): What is Gath? (Goliath of Gath is champion of the Philistines. The Philistines lived in five cities along the southern Mediterranean coastline. They challenged the Israelites for territory held further inland. Their ability to forge iron weaponry gave them a huge advantage over the Israelites.)
