To Go Back Wholly in Spirit...

... to those remote centuries of the East (Pope Pius XII, Divino Afflante Spiritu 35) ....

The goal of biblical studies is to enable us to "go back wholly in spirit" to biblical times so that we can encounter the Word both as it was given in that time and as it might be interpreted today.

In order to do this, we need to exercise our imaginations.
Can we stretch our imaginations to embrace ideas and cultures beyond the everyday? If we can't, how can we expect to embrace the Word of God, which comes to us as deep mystery?

So when we lead others--adults and children alike--in encountering Scripture, we need to help them first exercise their imaginations in creative ways. After all, creativity is the best way to live in the image of the Creator!
